In 1958, by accommodating the request from the top management of its US sales company, Brother started developing portable typewriters that were in high demand in the US at that time. While utilizing the technologies that were fostered by the development and production of sewing machines and knitting machines, Brother’s engineers had been working in research and development collaboratively to seek the manufacturing process of types, and in 1961, started the production of the “JP1-111”. Having a 30% lower price yet equal performance as compared to US-made typewriters, it soon created a sensation in the US market.
